    Overview:

The hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo and down to Achada do Teixeira is one of Madeira’s most spectacular high-altitude walks. It’s a demanding trek, suited for those in good physical condition, offering dramatic views of volcanic landscapes and sweeping vistas. The path, while challenging, rewards hikers with breathtaking scenes from Madeira’s highest peaks, making it a must-do for adventurous spirits seeking to experience the island’s majestic heights.

The walk begins at Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak in Madeira, which is accessible by car.

This challenging trail connects two of the highest peaks in Madeira, offering rugged terrain, steep climbs, and occasionally narrow paths. Portions of the walk include steps and secured sections with handrails.

The summit of Pico Ruivo offers unparalleled views of the island, standing as the highest point in Madeira. On clear days, you can see both the north and south coasts simultaneously.

The trek covers approximately 13 kilometers and takes about 4h30m to 5 hours to complete, depending on pace and weather conditions.

Starting from Pico do Arieiro at about 1818 meters, the route ascends to Pico Ruivo at 1862 meters before descending to Achada do Teixeira.
