    Overview:

The Rabaçal – Risco – 25 Fontes Levada Walk is a captivating journey through one of Madeira’s most enchanting landscapes. Starting from the highlands of Rabaçal, the route traces the flow of a levada, passing through a dense, mist-covered laurel forest. This walk is renowned not just for its natural beauty but also for the spectacular Risco Waterfall and the charming 25 Fontes. The walk, requiring moderate effort due to some challenging terrain, is perfect for nature lovers and those looking to explore the serene and verdant parts of Madeira. The altitude provides a cooler climate, making it a refreshing escape during warmer months.

During the Rabaçal to 25 Fontes walk, you’ll navigate an 800-meter tunnel, so be sure to bring a headlight or flashlight.

The adventure begins in the remote region of Rabaçal, accessible by car or via a short shuttle ride from the parking area. This initial part of the journey brings you to a forested shelter where the trailhead is located.

As you follow the path of the Levada, the trail takes you through a dense laurel forest (Laurisilva), a UNESCO World Heritage site. The well-maintained path is lined with vibrant green mosses and ferns, creating a lush, almost magical ambiance. Some narrow and steep sections add a mild challenge to the hike, making it a rewarding experience for moderate hikers.

The walk features two major attractions: the stunning Risco Waterfall, which cascades dramatically into a clear pool below, and the 25 Fontes, a beautiful collection of springs that form a tranquil pond surrounded by lush foliage.

Covering a round-trip distance of approximately 11 kilometers, the walk typically takes around 3h30m to complete, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the waterfall and pond.

The levada maintains a gentle grade, but the altitude varies slightly, offering views that include towering cliffs and deep valley vistas. The trail is about 1000 meters above sea level, providing a cool and pleasant climate for hiking.
