The Levada dos Maroços offers a gentle and picturesque walking experience, perfect for enjoying the agricultural landscapes of Madeira’s Mimosa Valley. With stunning views of Machico Bay and minimal elevation changes, this levada walk is an excellent choice for a leisurely afternoon hike, especially during the mimosa blooming season. It’s an inviting option for those new to levada walking or families with children.
The trail begins in the village of Maroços, which is easily accessible by car from Machico, the nearest major town.
This is a relatively easy and enjoyable walk along a levada with minimal elevation gain. The path is well-maintained and offers safe footing, ideal for beginners or those looking for a relaxing hike.
Known as the “Mimosa Valley,” the area is famed for its lush, terraced landscapes and vibrant flowering mimosas (when in season). The path also offers beautiful views over Machico Bay.
The total length of the walk is about 6,5 kilometers round trip, typically taking about 2h30m to complete.
The altitude is fairly low, starting at about 300 meters above sea level, making it one of the more accessible levada walks in terms of physical effort.
